There are thousands of accredited nonprofit organizations each with their own significant mission. From cancer research, child protection and even youth development. One thing is certain, you don’t have to be wealthy philanthropist to make an impact. Here are some important organizations I wanted to spread awareness on.

Team Heart

Team Heart is a non-profit medical organization that aims to increase access to cardiac care in Rwanda. Each year nurses, surgeons, and anesthesiologist collaborate and volunteer their time to this cause. Although strep throat is completely treatable by an antibiotic, it spreads easily. In lower-income countries such as Rwanda, strep throat often goes untreated it eventually leads to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. Sadly, cardiac disease is the leading cause of death in the world. This cause is important to me because, ultimately lack of human and financial resources prevent them from helping more people who are desperately in need of medical attention. Operation Smile

Each year Operation Smile strives to improve surgical care while both educating and empowering local communities. With an international focus, they are committed to changing the lives of children who suffer from a cleft lip or palate. Often, these families can not afford the expense of surgery. Although the cause of cleft remains unknown, research is constantly looking for answers. This non-profit believes all children deserve access to the best care available, and all donations received are matched. Donate here.

Saving Grace

Saving Grace aims to end domestic violence and empower survivors on their individual vitality. This organization provides a 24-hour hotline for support, emergency housing, individual crisis counseling, and public awareness among other things. With help from the community, they are able to provide programs and resources for survivors to regain power and control of their lives. Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) occurs in many forms. The more society talks about it, the more likely it is to identify abusive behaviors. It is important to realize how self-esteem contributes to intellectual achievement, and personal happiness. There are many ways to raise awareness, and volunteering is just one of them. Read the Bend Source Weekly article here. Learn more about dating and domestic violence here
